From the history of the island
The history of the state that gave the world one of the most fashionable resorts is breathtaking. The uninhabited island was discovered by Portuguese sailors presumably at the beginning of the 16th century and was first named Sishna (that was the name of one of the ships of the discoverers). Subsequently, the Dutch colonialists renamed it in honor of Maurice of Orange.
Today, the cost of a vacation in Mauritius is of little concern to people inspired by the romance of the South Seas. The island’s architecture has preserved many monuments from the era of colonization. Since the late 16th century, it has been used as a temporary base for Dutch merchant ships. By the middle of the next century, a Dutch village arose, and around it – tobacco and sugar cane plantations. The labor force consisted of slaves brought from the island of Madagascar. The entire population of the island then did not reach half a thousand settlers! A trip to Mauritius will help you hear one of the many legends about this amazing time.
In the early 18th century, Mauritius became part of France and is now called Ile-de-France. The French built forts, shipyards, and roads, imported African slaves, developed plantations of all kinds of spices and coffee, and grew vegetables. And at the beginning of the 19th century, the English fleet recaptured the island from the French, making it a British colony under the Dutch name.
After the abolition of slavery in 1835, immigrants from China and India began to arrive in Mauritius – they engaged in rural labor here. Travelers going on tours to Mauritius will be struck by the fact that a very motley population has formed in the republic; however, everyone is united by the English language, love for their country, and hospitality to those who come here on vacation.
Having gained independence only in 1968, the state is currently a parliamentary republic. Today, favorable prices for vouchers to Mauritius are supported largely by competent government policy.
