In the past, people thought that the clock tower was deliberately designed to be inclined, but now it is clear that this is not the case. As the bell tower of the Pisa Cathedral, the design was erected vertically when construction began on August 9, 1173. The original design was 8 floors and 54.8 meters high. It is a unique white glittering medieval-style building, even if it was not tilted later, It will be one of the most noteworthy clock towers in Europe.

However, in 1185, when the bell tower was built to the fourth floor, it was discovered that due to uneven foundation and soft soil, the bell tower had been tilted to the southeast, and the construction was suspended. During the period in 1198, the existence of the bell in the bell tower was recorded, which indicated that although the bell tower was inclined, at least one bell was suspended, realizing its original intention as a bell tower.

In 1231, the project continued, and for the first time, there is a record of the use of marble in the bell tower. The builders took various measures to correct the tilt, and deliberately built the upper part of the bell tower to tilt in the opposite direction to compensate for the deviation of the center of gravity that has occurred. When it reached the seventh floor in 1278, the tower was no longer straight, but concave. The project was suspended again.

In 1292, Giovanni Pisano used a plumb line to measure the slope of the bell tower. In 1360, after stagnating for almost a century, the clock tower began its last sprint towards completion and made the last important amendment. In 1372, the top floor of the clock was completed. There are 7 bells in the 54-meter-high 8-story bell tower, but the bell tower is in danger of collapsing at all times.
